We murdered some teams because we outfootballed them – we beat Man United 5-0 in our first title-winning season by playing proper football, not just humping it and hoping for the best. Look at some of the old Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal teams. A lot of people think football was invented in 1992 but look at the Hungary team that beat England in 1953. We did it under pressure and with more physicality. When you see football now the opposition drop off and allow you to have more passes and it makes you look better. It’s a bit like Duncan Ferguson who’s still quite shy. But there were two Pats and off the pitch he always wants somebody to be close to. Pat had three looks – all of them stares. He’d have quite happily headed somebody’s head to score a goal and not think anything of it. As a player he was right on the edge between being really brave and just mad. He’s ideal for TV as he’s larger than life. Peter Reid’s always been buzzing and Andy Gray makes Duncan Ferguson look like a mouse. Adrian Heath was a moaner but he got everybody through the game. It was lovely to see the likes of Kevin Richardson, Paul Bracewell and Graeme Sharp. We appreciate each other and we trust each other and it’s very rare to get that. When you meet old team-mates, that bond never changes. It was like watching a DVD with 650 members of your family. We could beat anybody and play several different ways and it was lovely looking back with people who shared it with you – my old team-mates and the fans too. I suppose Leonardo Da Vinci or Picasso didn’t quite understand what they were doing till they were finished and this was the same. The history books record our two league titles and five major finals contested in the mid-80s but the film really made me think, ‘S**t, we were good, weren’t we’. I was at a screening at St George’s Hall in Liverpool of a new film called Howard’s Way about the great Everton team I played in. I’ve never liked watching myself and I don’t like looking back but on Monday night I did just that.
